The City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) District 508, is the largest community college system in Illinois and one of the largest in the nation, with 5,800 faculty and staff serving 120,000 students at seven campuses and thirteen satellite sites city-wide. The City Colleges of Chicago is currently in the midst of a collaborative effort to review and revise CCC programs and practices to ensure students leave CCC college-ready, career-ready and prepared to pursue their life’s goals.

CCC includes seven colleges: Richard J. Daley College, Kennedy-King College, Malcolm X College, Olive-Harvey College, Harry S Truman College, Harold Washington College and Wilbur Wright College. The system also oversees: the Washburne Culinary Institute, the French Pastry School, two restaurants, five Child Development Centers, the Center for Distance learning, the Workforce Institute, the public broadcast station WYCC-TV Channel 20 and radio station WKKC-FM 89.3FM.

Under minimal supervision, performs para-professional work in a science laboratory in the preparation, storage and maintenance of chemical and bio-chemical reagents, materials, and apparatus; takes general responsibility for operation of laboratory; and performs related duties as required. 


Inventories and maintains necessary supplies for college courses in biology, microbiology, and related subjects.


Writes requisitions for chemicals, supplies, equipment, and laboratory animals.  Prepares reagents with qualitative and quantitative specifications.  Maintains and does minor repair on various laboratory equipment.  Calibrates and prepares scientific instrumentation for class use.  Prepares bacteriological culture media and prepares class experiments by making solutions, organizing the necessary equipment and pre-testing it before it is demonstrated to the class.


Feeds and provides daily care for live laboratory animals.  Assembles equipment and supplies for other natural science laboratories.  Receives, stores and distributes laboratory equipment, chemicals and supplies.  Maintains the laboratory in an orderly and clean manner that ensures safety rules.


Writes educational documentation as needed.  Enforces safety rules in the laboratory and aides the instructor and students in demonstrations.  Supervises, trains, schedules, and evaluates staff of student laboratory assistants.


Performs other duties as assigned.


All CCC employees are required to adhere to CCC Customer Service Excellence standards.


Graduation from high school or the equivalent, supplemented by two years of college chemistry, laboratory biology or photography; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 


Considerable knowledge of routine laboratory procedures and safety.  Good knowledge of biological or chemical and physical science laboratory methods.  Knowledge of scientific instrumentation used in science laboratories.


Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of subordinates.  Ability to use a personal computer in all inventory and record keeping responsibilities.  Ability to instruct students on use of laboratory equipment through use of strong organizational skills, supervisory skills and good verbal communication.
