Design Engineer - Creative
Design Engineering collaborates with Hallmark North America and leverages both internal and external resources to deliver compelling product/service possibilities and solutions. Design Engineering accomplishes this by combining business needs, consumer needs, and creative aspirations with existing and emerging capabilities. Design Engineering includes industrial designers, scientists, product engineers and packaging engineers supporting Innovation Platforms, Retail (Keepsakes, Gifts, Plush, Books, Memory Keeping), Greetings, Gift Presentation, and Party product development teams. Design Engineering works within the Creative Product Development Division to provide technical expertise in the development of products. The Industrial Design team leverages design thinking to create emotionally compelling product solutions. The Product Engineering and Scientists teams work with product creation teams to develop unique product solutions that involve technologies (such as electronics and mechanics), paper mechanics and formats as well as new materials. The Packaging Engineering team work with product creation teams to develop new solutions for retail, wholesale, and shipping packaging that support design and marketing direction.
Design Engineer – Kansas City, MO
The Design Engineer has the rewarding opportunity to see his/her work in thousands of retail stores and impact our business at retail and with the consumer. As a Design Engineer, you will work in a team environment with our Innovation Creative and Marketing product creation teams. The Design Engineer is considered the primary resource responsible for providing the technical expertise needed to discover, inspire and develop new product. Specifically, the Engineer:
Designs solutions to overcome technical challenges in product development,
Provides engineering guidance and direction from brainstorming and product concepting through product creation and into product manufacture. This includes partnering with outside vendors and external technical and innovation resources.
Develops specifications and directs the completion of technical drawings and prototypes based on criteria provided by the product development team,
Champions innovations, and emerging technical capabilities that are guided by consumer insights,
Develops and implements new ideas to measurably grow revenue and earnings, and
Does so in close collaboration with all business partners to meet requirements for functionality, quality, cost and design integrity.
The positions posted here will support innovative product development in either Party (plates and partyware) and Gift Presentation (gift bags, wrap, etc), or Greetings (cards), various Product Platforms and/or Gold Crown (retail store product development), as well as other business areas.
There also may be opportunities to travel 5-10% of the time to manufacturing plants and supplier facilities including international travel.

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
Three (3) years of experience developing products or general engineering experience at Hallmark Cards.
Two (2) years of project leadership experience.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
5-10 years’ experience in consumer goods, toy or other related product development.
Experience collaborating on product development with Industrial Designers.
Successful experience as a project leader demonstrating initiative and leadership.
Strong communication skills, problem solving and decision making skills.
Experience with software development and embedded systems is a plus but not required.
To be successful in this role, the incumbent must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team of people with diverse skill backgrounds. Short deadlines are common; must be able to work under pressure. Energy and enthusiasm for new product development is essential.
