I am a Bilingual Community Education Specialist and Elderly Information Counselor (SHIP) here at Agency On Aging of South Central. One of my goals here at AASCC is to increase Hispanic outreach in the New Haven and Valley areas. After recently providing presentations on the services available to clients in our area, it has become more of priority to lift the language barriers and increase access to services for this population.
Representatives from the Aging Resource Center met with groups of seniors at senior centers and housing sites in focus groups to better the steps that are necessary to meet the present and future needs of these seniors. In addition to the focus groups with consumers, I also feel that it will be beneficial to all social service providers to come to together to discuss the best method of relaying target services to under served populations.

Present is the Bilingual Community Education Specialist for the Agency on Aging of South Central CT. She was promoted to this position as a result of her successful work as an information counselor where she made inroads into the Hispanic consumer and provider groups in the region.
Janet developed a coalition of service providers who serve Hispanic elders entitled Project H.O.P.E. (Hispanic Outreach Program for Elders) which began as a two agency project and now includes 47 community providers, for-profit and non-profit. The coalition meets regularly to identify unique needs of Hispanic elders and the organizations best positioned to meet the needs. In addition, H.O.P.E. provides training programs for members to ensure providers have current, accurate information on topics of concern to seniors. Lastly, H.O.P.E. sponsors community programs for consumers designed to educate and celebrate our Hispanic elders. This year H.O.P.E. sponsored its first Senior Cultural Festival where older adults of many cultures came together to demonstrate and perform arts, crafts, song and dance of their various countries of origin.
Janet is the chairperson for H.O.P.E. and facilitator for all its committees.
Janet came to the Agency on Aging from the retail community where she worked in many different capacities in retail, restaurant and corporate cultures, but in each position she relied upon her natural skills as a community organizer, fund raiser, party planner and humanist.
Janet’s commitment to serving older adults with dignity and respect and her compassion for all people is evident to all who work with her.
Currently, Janet is in school completing her formal education to advance her professional goals.
