To change or not to change? / Cambiar o no?

It took 100 years to detect the gravitational waves after Einstein predicted their existence. This is a clear statement of the world we live where we take things for granted and why you have to revisit your deepest assumptions on a regular basis. It was only after tuning up a couple of costly detectors (LIGO) that were designed for this purpose - but for years failed to confirm it - that they finally produced the evidence of the fabric of spacetime. In our Supply Chain World the ripples caused by a slowing global growth are testing the resilience of companies and societies alike, and crying out for revisiting the latest assumptions before the next hundreds years, by then this may not look quite as ugly, it will look extremely different.

Another big event today that has to do with a decision of the House of the Lords, Britain’s upper chamber of Parliament to phase out the use of vellum in favor of paper as a media to document the legislative acts of both chambers. It took 1,000 years for the change intended on April this year and exposing hidden opportunities to make it to the digital age. Needless to say, animal rights activists are celebrating the decision while the manufacturer of the product is making his case based on tradition and durability. The discussion took an interesting turn about digital decay or planned obsolescence, characteristics of the consumed oriented design schools of the day. The Magna Carta has proven the benefits of parchment for the last 800 years.

This situation raises questions about the technological life cycle in the Supply Chain, where as a Company am I standing with the talent, process and tools for the next generation to come? Or two? Do I even care?

===================================
