Plant Engineer

Job Description:

Sonoco is looking for a successful Plant Engineer that is responsible for the assembly, documentation, and closure of all assigned capital projects. This includes planning, design, economic justification, NPV analysis, purchasing, cost tracking and field management. All projects will be reviewed for maximum safety, product quality, optimum productivity and effective cost controls. This position will also be responsible for the efficient management of plant utilities, power plant operations, industrial wastes, and environmental compliance. This position will be responsible for the required reporting and routine control monitoring in all areas.  The Plant Engineer provides the Mill Superintendent and Plant Manager with a monthly review and report of project status, operating cost variances for utilities and power operations and an environmental compliance update. Also provides technical and engineering assistance to the manufacturing organization in order to safely maximize equipment uptime, optimize equipment and process efficiency and minimize maintenance and operating costs. Assists in recommending and implementing MRO initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manages all engineering projects assigned by the Plant manager, develops CAA’s, specifies and purchases new equipment, plans projects and work schedules.

  • Coordinates with local management and Division Engineering all on site construction installation of new equipment, controls and structures.

  • Coordinates with machine builders, contractors, local suppliers and service shops.

  • Ensures that proper materials, manuals, engineering drawings, and assembly drawings are available for proper installation and maintenance of all new equipment and facilities. 

  • Ensures conformance with safety policies and procedures; ensures that necessary permits are obtained and that local, state and federal regulations are satisfied.

  • Tracks and controls project expenditures to ensure that costs are minimized and that projects are closed in a timely manner and within approved budget amount.

  • Manages building facilities, utilities and power plant operations.

  • Directly supervises assigned power plant personnel for safe and efficient operation of the boiler plant facility and related equipment.

  • Assists with predictive and preventive maintenance programs and techniques.

  • Coordinates the use of outside consultants in major maintenance related activities.

  • Assists in the development of maintenance training and skill development programs.

  • Takes initiative in identifying and implementing projects to improve maintenance efficiency, energy efficiency, and equipment uptime and process safety.

  • Takes initiative in indentifying opportunities for process improvements by tracking mechanical and process related causes of downtime, lost time, scrap and lower than standard productivity.

  • Takes initiative in seeking opportunities to reduce effluent, solid waste and improving environmental compliance and loss control.

  • Assists the Plant Manager, Mill Superintendent and Maintenance Supervisor in developing high OVA capital budgets and accurate operating budgets.

  • Assists Maintenance Supervisor and Lead man in vacation and weekend maintenance supervisory coverage.

Required Skills:

  • Four year degree required.

Required Experience:

  • Must be a recognized leader in safety performance and awareness.

  • Must demonstrate a high involvement management style, establish, high standards and use team based activities and techniques to achieve results.

  • Must demonstrate thorough knowledge of paper mill machinery and processes, mechanical and electrical principles, and capital project management skills.

  • Must demonstrate successful completion of assigned performance objectives.
