Montgomery Dept. of Police reaches out to the Hispanic Community

The Montgomery County Department of Police of Maryland has been steadily working to get more Hispanic officers in their department. Why? Easy, they are not enough.

In 2005, there were approximately 11,000 police response calls that involved Hispanic/Latinos and in 90% of those cases, the use of a Spanish speaking officer was required.

But from the approximately 1,100 police officers on the Montgomery County Department of Police only 53 are Hispanic/Latino. Not enough to answer te number of calls that require some Spanish speaking.

Nine hundred forty-eight thousand (948,000) citizens populate the county’s 496 square miles. According to the 2004 census the Hispanic/Latino Community represents 13.3% of the county’s population. And the Montgomery County Department of Police is aiming to mirror the county in which they serve.

Chief J. Thomas Manger has pledged to give service to the citizen’s of Montgomery County regardless of the language they speak. It is the Dept. goal to reach out to the Hispanic/Latino Community with the hopes of building a stronger relationship. By sharing their different programs and employment opportunities they hope to attract more members of the community to join the Department.

In Montgomery County, the innovative philosophy of community policing is being put into successful practice. Police officers provide quality services while working hand-in-hand with citizens and government to maintain a safe and law-abiding community. Montgomery County is a great place to work and live. Directly north of Washington, D.C., it offers urban, suburban and rural lifestyles and a myriad cultural, recreational and educational opportunities.

As a Montgomery County Police Officer, you’ll grow professionally and personally as you advance your career in rewarding community policing environment. After two years as a patrol officer, you will be eligible to apply for assignment in your choice of specialized units.
