Remember that line in the movie Jaws, when the shark takes a big bite out of the boat and one guy says to the other, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” I’ve always loved that line.
With this economy, I’ve decided I need a bigger boat. Maybe you do too. I’m still thinking on this, but I have a few ideas that might help:
Network more- I’ll probably do a lot of this because it’s fun, and writers spend way too much time alone.
Increase my knowledge-President Obama, in his first speech to Congress and the nation, asked all of us to get one more year of education. I don’t think he meant just the young people should hit the books again. He meant all of us. I’ve had a lot of fun with this idea on my regular blog: (http://JanelleMerazHooper.blogspot.com/ ), but we won’t go there today. For myself, I’ve targeted a class in Voice-Overs that should help me promote my books. It's a short class, but it’s a start.
Increase the number of hours in my work day- I don’t recommend this idea to anyone else, but as I’m married to a corporate bankruptcy specialist, I have a lot of extra time on my hands right now. I started out by starting my work day at seven instead of eight, and thought I’d quit at six instead of five. With an empty house, I’m finding that I often work until seven or eight. Don’t buy me that tiara yet—I took off a whole day to play with my grandson during spring break. I would have taken off more, but his dance card is always full. I’m lucky he could work me in at all!
I’ll be glad if my boat really does get bigger…I’m getting awfully tired of having to blow the darn thing up and patch the leaks…
