Beginning Sept. 15- Oct 15th is Hispanic Heritage Month. Across the country events, screenings and fun activities will be taking place to celebrate Hispanic Culture. You may find organizations, schools, and community centers hosting events that will encourage people of all walks of life to join in the fun. National Hispanic Heritage month was started in 1968 by President Lyndon Johnson who initally started it for only a week. When Ronald Reagan became president in 1988, he extended the celebration to cover a 30-day period. The celebration starts on Sept 15th because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Hispanic Heritage is not only the celebration of the culture but also of those that have made some major contributions. Artists, writers, poets, and entertainers are all acknowledged for their work and take this opportunity to showcase their work to the public.
