Raul Ramos y Sanchez Let's move beyond quotas

There is growing criticism among some in the Latino community who feel president-elect Obama has not appointed enough Hispanics to cabinet positions. The complaints began with the choice of Hillary Clinton over Bill Richardson for Secretary of State. New Mexico’s Governor Richardson, whose mother is of Mexican descent, has considerable foreign policy experience, having served as U.N. Ambassador during the Clinton administration. The argument over a person’s qualifications for a cabinet post is… Continue

Raul Ramos y Sanchez Government bailout of Detroit won’t save jobs

Those who think a government bailout of Detroit’s Big Three will save jobs should think again. This from today’s New York Times: “G.M., the world’s largest automaker for decades, said Tuesday that it was in such dire straits that it would deeply cut jobs, factories, brands and executive pay as part of its plea to get $12 billion in federal loans and an additional $6 billion line of credit.” Yes, Detroit’s Big Three are asking Washington once again for help. And their collective request for a h… Continue

Raul Ramos y Sanchez Our new president must tackle immigration reform

During the campaign, president-elect Obama promised to initiate legislation for comprehensive immigration reform in the first 100 days of his administration. Like most presidents, Mr. Obama will come into office with considerable political capital during the proverbial "honeymoon" period with congress and the media. However, the economy has already become Mr. Obama's primary public focus. No sensible person would argue our faltering economy is not a vital issue. But if those of us committed to… Continue

Raul Ramos y Sanchez The chauffeured limos arrive at the welfare office

Picture this cartoon: An impeccably-groomed CEO emerges from his chauffeured limo to join the line outside the welfare office. In front of him stand others of his ilk, waiting impatiently to pick up a check. With very little exaggeration, that was the scene in Washington this week as the chiefs of the Big Three U.S. automakers “arrived before Congress in corporate jets with tin cups in hand.” Is anyone surprised? The federal government has already ponied up $700 billion to bail out Wall Street… Continue

Raul Ramos y Sanchez Does it matter Obama is not an heir of slavery?

Many have argued that Barack Obama is biracial, not black. Yet the label “African-American” is especially appropriate for our president-elect. Unlike most people of African descent in the United States, Mr. Obama can trace his roots directly to Africa through his Kenyan father. For most black Americans, that connection is lost in the ancestral slurry of slavery. That very fact raises another distinction between Mr. Obama and other African-Americans: He is not a descendant of slaves. Is that sig… Continue
