Maverick Latino Spirit !

Reunion Reflections - Class of 1976

By Robert A. Beltran, M.D., M.B.A., FACMQ - President - Latino Med Policy Institute

I wish to mischievously suggest that our Class of 1976 created and expresses the “maverick spirit” that is alive and well at the USC Keck School of Medicine. This spirit is the fuel for creativity and innovation that drives change in today’s world of medicine.

To Americans, imbued with the frontier spirit, a maverick is an admirable person,… Continue

Immigrants not a financial burden, Texas' State Report Claims

A recent report by the Texas State Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn says that overall, illegal immigrants put about $420 million more into state coffers than they take out.

An official state document that contradicts the idea that immigrants are a financial burden can carry considerable weight as Democrats take control of Congress, and as potential candidates consider their options in the 2008 presidential election.

Supporters of illegal immigrants embraced the report.… Continue

Latinos feel strongly American, Survey Says

According to the recently released, Latino National Survey, American Latinos have a growing sense of pan-ethnic identity in addition to their sense of being Americans, overwhelmingly want to learn English but also want to pass Spanish to the next generation, and tend to assimilate rapidly into American culture.

As 2006 comes to an end and we start to review the events of this past year, one of the things that remains present in the minds of politicians, social commentators, public policy advocates and the general population alike is the heated immigration debate.

In fact, the earlier half of this year was marked by large-scale political mobilizations led by the Hispanic community like the American public has never seen before. Those street protests started in… Continue

Immigrants and Mental Health

The AP/Monterey County Herald examined how many low-income immigrants and their families have problems with access to mental health treatment because of "a language barrier and a deep cultural divide." The National Latino and Asian-American Study, conducted in December 2003 with funds from the National Institute of Mental Health, found that Hispanic and Asian immigrants had a lower rate of mental health problems than native U.S. residents but sought treatment for their problems less often.… Continue

New data from exit polls show Latino voters are strikingly diverse

Analyses of exit polls are detailing the values, concerns and motivations of Latino voters specifically. Their concerns, it turns out, are just as broad as those of other Americans.

Latinos worry about the war, the economy and the quality of the nation's leadership. As with other Americans, they are not concerned primarily with immigration policy.

Above all, Latinos are socially diverse. Recent arrivals might worry about different issues and vote differently than Latinos… Continue
