Hispanic Magazine has named three-star U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, 2003 Hispanic of the Year. Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez was the man charged with the challenging task and enormous responsibilities of stabilizing postwar Iraq.

Hispanic Professors Wanted

A study by Ms. Turner and Daryl G. Smith, of Claremont Graduate University, to be published in January in The Journal of Higher Education, found that if universities want to diversify, they must put aside their usual hiring practices.



The study, which examined nearly 700 faculty searches at three large public-research universities from 1995 to 1998, found that majorities of both African-American and Hispanic professors were hired under special circumstances. Universities either… Continue

Hispanics Send Billions Home

Hispanic immigrants to the United States send nearly $30 billion home annually, nearly double the $17.2 billion the U.S. spent in total on foreign aid this year.



The money is used for all sorts of things, says a study by the Pew Hispanic Center and the Inter-American Development Bank, such as savings, food, shelter, and other necessities.



"Migration is now not only an escape valve, it is a fuel pump" to foreign economies, said the report.

Texas A&M may add Hispanic studies

A new Hispanic studies department could be coming to Texas A&M University next fall, as campuses nationwide move toward replacing traditional language departments with broader fields of study.



A&M’s new department will include courses on the Spanish language, Hispanic political and cultural issues and the university’s first courses in Portuguese.

Latino immigration topic of panel discussion in Iowa City

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, a panel discussion was held in the Memorial Union Thursday to discuss the topic of "Latino Issues in America."



"The issues facing Latinos sometimes get left behind," said Jerry Garcia, assistant professor of history. One of the issues Garcia spoke about was immigration and how it is depicted in magazines and books.
