Latino college workshop touts higher education

Phoenix, AZ - On the eve of a four-day national conference exploring the barriers to higher education for Latinos, about 600 Valley high-schoolers got a taste of college life. "So many Latino kids don't view college as something they can aspire to," Phoenix College counselor Fred Amador said. Breast Cancer Treatment Guide Aimed at Hispanic Women

FRIDAY, Oct. 14 (HealthDay News) -- A new Spanish-language booklet explains surgery choices to U.S. Hispanic women recently diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. The booklet, from the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), provides evidence-based information about lumpectomy, a breast-sparing procedure that's followed by radiation therapy; mastectomy, which involves the removal of the entire breast; and mastectomy with breast reconstruction surgery.

Hispanic immigrants meet need for New Orleans laborers

NEW ORLEANS -- Most of the signs are handwritten and simply worded, such as "Workers Wanted" or "Need 50 Laborers Now!" Word has gotten out and each morning day laborers -- who come from Central America and Mexico by way of California, Texas and Arizona -- gather on street corners in the Kenner and Metairie neighborhoods on the western edge of the city.

US News Coverage of Guatemalan Disaster 'Shameful'

CHICAGO U.S. newspapers should be ashamed of the paltry coverage they have given the destruction wreaked on Guatemala by Hurricane Stan, says the president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Veronica Villafañe. NJ celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a statewide tour

New Jersey recently kicked off its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with a seven-day Latino Bus & Bike Tour promoting the state's Hispanic history, culture and heritage.
