Many Latinos lack training for higher-paying jobs

Asbury Park Press , NJ - Latinos make up a relatively strong percentage of the state labor force, but a high number aren't finishing college and therefore lack skills and training needed to obtain white-collar jobs.

Hispanic workers sue hotel

A government lawsuit alleges that the luxury Melrose Hotel told Hispanic employees they could not speak Spanish on the premises - not even during break time or to Spanish-speaking guests - and when they complained about it, the hotel's top manager told them "Adios."

Joining forces to help Hispanic Small Businesses

Clear Channel Radio pursues Hispanic listeners

Over the next year and a half, Clear Channel Radio -- which owns six stations in the Austin market -- will convert 20 to 25 stations around the country to Hispanic formats. Clear Channel Radio is the country's No. 1 owner of radio stations.

Hispanic Studies Degree Approved

Corvallis - A newly approved Oregon State University graduate program in contemporary Hispanic studies will tie intercultural communication with practical experience in real-world situations. The Oregon State Board of Higher Education has authorized OSU to establish a program leading to a master of arts in contemporary Hispanic studies, effective immediately.

Closing the gap in care quality

A 2002 report from the Institute of Medicine, a nonprofit government advisory arm of the National Academy of Sciences, detailed the problem. It noted that minorities tend to receive lower-quality health care than non-minorities, even when both have similar health insurance and income.

Training offered for Hispanic firms

The Chicago Tribune - The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce have joined together to create a training program for Hispanic construction firms.



The Minority Contractor Training Initiative is a first-of-its-kind program that will be funded by the state and administered by the chamber in an effort to make Hispanic firms more competitive.

Hispanic scores climb

College-bound seniors of Hispanic descent scored promising gains on the latest SAT exams both statewide and across the nation - a relief for test sponsors who previously voiced anxiety over a widening achievement gap between whites and minorities.
