August 31, 2004, USA TODAY — More big-money private investors are circling the Hispanic market's sizzling economic growth. Carlyle Group, one of the top U.S. private-equity firms, is scouting investments in businesses chasing Mexican-American consumers. Hispanic voters up 55% in N.C.

AP - Charlotte - The number of registered voters in North Carolina who indicate that they are Hispanic has increased 55 percent since January, as organizers try to show their increasing political muscle. The number of known Hispanic registered voters rose from 8,136 to 12,607 between Jan. 1 and Aug. 23. The total number is difficult to know because the state didn't list Hispanic as an ethnicity choice on voter-registration forms until January 2002.

Non-Hispanic whites no longer Texas' majority

HOUSTON, TX - AP - White non-Hispanics are no longer the majority in Texas -- for the first time since the 1800s. Thursday's Census Bureau survey said whites stopped being the majority in Texas as of last year.



Also, the numbers show that Texas joined only Illinois and North Carolina in having a poverty rate that measurably increased, while income decreased, in 2002-03.

Bankrupt hospital serving Hispanic immigrants closing

Los Angeles, AP - A financially troubled hospital that served as a principal care destination for Hispanic immigrants must now close its doors and it has many concerned the closure will overwhelm resources in the city's remaining emergency rooms.
