Immigration Rising on Bush's To-Do List

WASHINGTON — Worried that the tone of the immigration debate is pushing Latinos away from the Republican Party, the White House is working with political strategists to create a broad coalition of business groups and immigrant advocates to back a plan President Bush could promote in Congress and to minority voters in the 2006 elections.

Language Barrier Breakthrough

English Language Learners (ELLs) are happy to get some good news. Thanks to a new discovery, it is easier to learn to read another language. The discovery – called the Integrated Method -- is a new way to show reading material. The student learns the foreign language simply by reading the familiar one, without extra effort.

Hispanic Radio Company Expands to TV

Miami-based Spanish Broadcasting System Inc. on Wednesday announced a deal to buy WDLP-TV (Ch. 22) and other television assets serving greater Miami, expanding beyond its base in radio into Spanish-language TV.

SBS said it would pay $37.5 million for the TV venture that now is owned by William De La Peña and reaches about 1.5 million homes in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area.

Eduardo Diaz

The former director of cultural affairs for the city of San Antonio, Texas, Eduardo Diaz, has been chosen as the new director of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Hispanic students faring better in math & reading

WASHINGTON - Hispanic and Black 9-year-olds' scores on a math and reading test that's administered to thousands of youths nationwide are getting closer to the traditionally higher marks of white students, according to results released Thursday.

Sponsor Expects Hispanic Community To Oppose English Language Bill

AP - The sponsor of an Ohio House bill to designate English as the official language of Ohio says he expects it to draw opposition from the state's Hispanic community. But Rep. Courtney Combs says that opposition underscores the need for a common language.
