Profile Information

about me
As a child of salvadorean immigrants, life was hard in the impoverished, crime-infested North East Los Angeles neighborhood I grew up in. I managed to evade many deadening ends-teen pregnancy, high school drop out, drugs and gangs-and struggle for independence and freedom from the confines of negative stereotypes. I am the first in my family to go to college, recieve a B.A. and keep going on to obtain my first Master's degree.
what is your current, past or ideal job title?
I have worked in research for the past 7 years. The thing I most like about it is, finding out information that can help solve some problems or at least get closer to the root of the problem. The ideal job for me would be to put this research aspect into my career along with creating things to help people. I will be studying Linguistics and Teaching English as a Foreign Language. With this field I hope to be able to teach and find ways to ease language acquisition for non-English speakers, especially Hispanics who, for some reason, don't make it a priority. This could be due to the lack of resources, time and money. Immigration also plays an important part, since there are many undocumented workers with little access to any type of resources for fear of being deported. Moreover, a challenge I'd be willing to take is the preservation of minority languages. I think no one language should be viewed as superior as our roots and culture are grounded in the languages our ancestors communicated.
what languages do you speak?
Spanish, Portuguese (intermediate level), Italian (conversational level)
what countries have you visited?
El Salvador, Mexico, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Belize, Costa Rica
name someone you most admire
My mother, for her perserverance, her kind caring ways, and for her aggressiveness
which communities do you actively participate in?
