Profile Information

about me
My name is Liliana Parada Rios, I just graduated on February from the Engineering School of La Sabana University that is located in Bogotá, Colombia, were I came from. My major is in Agro Industrial Processes, the area in which I have developed most of my experience. I developed my internship and thesis with a company dedicated to the dairy industry.

My thesis work was mainly an investigation related to the pathogens (Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes) population decrease in UHT and raw milk after treating the milk samples with a new processing technology; High Power Ultrasound waves. During the investigation, part of my duties were giving weekly reports, giving presentations at the company every month, developing statistical analysis for every data obtained and gathering all the technical and scientific information related to the topic for presenting a scientific paper that included the results and analysis of the whole investigation process. This paper is in process of publication. It is important to highlight that 60% of the thesis work was inside the microbiology laboratory, I needed to prepare samples, culture media, sterilize media, laboratory equipment and tools. I also needed to follow and design protocols for every procedure involved as validations for almost all of them. Sanitary precautions were absolutely necessary for each task performed.

After completing my thesis, the company offered me to perform my internship with them. During my internship I developed a handbook of procedures, safety measures and guidelines based on Good Manufacturing Procedures for pharmaceutical products (OMS #32 Inform) for a group of engineers that were in charge of obtaining the product and process certification for eight cattle products, some of them were nutrition supplements, probiotic nutriment and pest control products with EM (Efficient Microorganisms). I also developed a study of the rheological behavior of milk samples with different fat content and another one related to the validation of fat content for raw milk in order to keep quality standards from the suppliers. I am used to handle deadlines and multi task situations, as they can be experienced at a laboratory and at a production plant. Working at one of the top dairy industries of Colombia (Alquería S.A.) gave me the opportunity to interact with people from all around the country and helped me to improve my leadership skills trough the team work skills necessary for all of the projects in which I participated.
My performance at laboratory practices and researching projects was always outstanding, in fact I was asked to be the Biochemistry and Physical Properties Laboratory monitor more than once. In three occasions I was elected for receiving a distinction of “Distinguished Student”, a distinction given for the best GPA each semester.

Been bilingual and coming from another culture gives me the diversity of thinking always necessary for keeping an open mind and a creative way of approaching interaction with people from different backgrounds and a creative way of thinking, always necessary for being what an engineer mostly is, a problem solver.
what is your current, past or ideal job title?
I would like to be part of a research and development department, as a researcher or engineer researcher. I am also very interested in food quality control, so I would love to be a quality analyst or supervisor.

Improvement of processes at a manufacturing industry is certainly one of my developments fields, so I would enjoy a position as a plant engineer or process engineer.
