- about me
- Lari Martinez is Cuban-American and a Floridian. He has been a U.S. Diplomat with the U.S. Department of State for 22 years after having been an attorney in Miami for five years with a major law firm.
Lari is one of 16 Diplomats in Residence in the U.S. The Diplomat in Residence Programs selects senior foreign service officers and brings them back to the U.S. for a period of one or two years. He is the only Diplomat in Residence being shared by two schools – FIU and MDC. He also covers other schools in South Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition to being our Diplomat in Residence, he is Visiting Professor at FIU in the International Relations Department. His commitment to our students has been such that each semester he has donated the stipend he receives from FIU as an adjunct professor to a scholarship for students with financial need.
Lari received his college degree in pure math from Duke, a law degree from the University of Florida, a Masters degree in International and Comparative Law from the University of Brussels, and a second Master’s degree in National Security Strategy degree from the National War College. In addition, he has an honorary MBA from a university in Spain. As a Rotary Foundation Scholar in Europe, Lari studied at the International Faculty of Comparative Law in Strasburg, France and at The Hague Academy in Holland in Private International Law.
His overseas assignments at U.S. embassies and consulates have been in Peru, Northern Ireland, London, Bilbao, Madrid, Bosnia, Florence, and Greece. His Washington assignments include Senior Desk Officer for El Salvador, Senior Advisor in the Office of Foreign Missions responsible for foreign diplomats in the U.S., and the creator and chief of the Regulatory Compliance Unit responsible for the J visa international visitor exchange program.
Mr. Martinez has been the Diplomat in Residence at Florida International University and at Miami Dade College since July 2007. He is also a visiting professor at FIU teaching the course in Diplomacy.
