What's the difference between Latino and Hispanic?

"This whole post is convoluted, poorly thought out and very poorly recorded. If the idea is to explain a complex concept in simple terms, this post qualifies as an example of how not to go about it."

All-English versus a bilingual curriculum in schools

The debate whether bilingual education should be promoted in schools is being discussed by intellectuals across America. Supporters of an all-English based curriculum believe that the more immersed in English a Spanish-speaking student is, the sooner he or she will begin to understand it and use it to communicate with others. On the other hand stand those who propose a bilingual education curriculum beginning in elementary school; teaching classes in Spanish to students who do not fully…See More

UNM's Combined BA/MD Degree Program

The shortage of physicians in New Mexico encouraged the University of New Mexico to develop a Combined BA/MD Degree Program wherein high schools students obtain a baccalaureate degree that, if completed successfully, will reserve them a seat in the UNM School of Medicine. Latino High School students who have an inclination with the sciences should consider the Combined BA/MD Degree Program as it will not only prepare them academically, but also train them to serve communities with diminishing…See More

Hispanics and Education: a Texas-Sized Challenge for States

AUSTIN, Texas – Manuel Ramirez was the first in his family to get a college degree, and it wasn’t easy. His parents, who brought him to the U.S. illegally from Guanajuato, Mexico, when he was 8 years old, made just enough to get by with day labor and house cleaning. They could not afford to pay their son’s roughly $10,000 tuition at the University of Texas at Austin, so Manuel earned extra money as a server in restaurants, coloring hair at a spa, translating Spanish, working in a rock quarry and…See More

Should we be called Hispanics?

Being labeled as a Hispanic in the US means being part of a group of people who speak the same language and share a similar history. People in this group, however, do not have the same ethnicity. Consider Peruvians, for example. Natives of the Andes have distinct facial and bodily features differentiating them from natives of the coast and of the Amazon jungle. By natives, I refer to people whose forefathers did not mingle with Spaniards or any of their mestizo descendants. Evidently, mestizos…See More

Tackling the shortage of Hispanic STEM professionals

Hispanics have felt reluctant of pursuing STEM careers because they feel they don't fit in the programs offered at the university level. And those Hispanic students that do enroll tend to have a high drop-out rate. But according to Mark B. Rosenberg, president of Florida International University (FIU), the problem begins at the high school level, wherein there are not sufficient Hispanic teachers of STEM careers. Hispanics' Daily Spending Well Above U.S. Average

Gallup Poll published the "Hispanics' Daily Spending Well Above U.S. Average" story wherein they discuss how Hispanics compare to other ethnicities regarding the amount of money they spend on a daily basis. After reading the story, I tried to come up with something smart to say, but was unable to because I am unsure how these numbers can be interpreted and used. The article relates the…See More

Hispanic children are least likely to be academically ready for kindergarten

According to the research conducted by Children Trends, Hispanic children “are least likely to be academically ready for kindergarten”. Though the study includes many more facts and statistics, this particular one caught my attention because it provides parents with a tool that pinpoints what they must work on with their kids. Tables indicate how Hispanic children compare to non-Hispanic…See More
