BIO

Adalberto E. Ruiz

Adalberto (Alberto) Ruiz has experienced life in various communities throughout the country and abroad. He has much to share and is known for his creative leadership and sincere dedication to civic engagement and social progress, especially among those in greatest need. He is the Director of Human Resources and Social Justice Initiatives for the Law Office of Domingo Garcia. He has served as the Texas Field Organizer for the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project and is the former Special Projects Coordinator of the Experience in Democracy and Leadership Program of the Bert Corona Leadership Institute in Washington, DC. Previously, he served as the Public Affairs Specialist for an elected city official in DC. While there, he spearheaded the first DC Government Latino Day, an effort to more strategically connect the growing number of DC Latino and international residents and their children with education, employment opportunities, city services, and community resources.

While in college he worked as an ESL math instructor to low income immigrant school children, interned as a reporter for DC’s Hispanic Link magazine, and was recognized by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists for his work in prose, poetry and oratory skills. While in college, he served as editor-in-chief of his university’s newspaper and was elected by his peers to serve as the sole-student representative to The University of the District of Columbia Board of Trustees.

Alberto has diligently expanded and refined his understanding and awareness of other cultures, traveling to parts of Canada, Russia, Europe, Mexico, and Central and South America. He has also traveled to various communities from New York to Arizona and from Michigan to south Texas, attending and participating in educational and cultural meetings and events.

In his role as the Special Projects Coordinator for the Bert Corona Leadership Institute in Washington, DC, he developed and implemented the first national forum for migrant and immigrant youth focused on nurturing and sustaining the leadership skills of first generation/low income students.

He recently returned from Michoacan, Mexico where he worked, traveled, and studied for three years managing a family-owned jean-making factory. Alberto taught a TOFEL preparation coarse to engineers and other professionals and gave classes to youth at the John F. Kennedy English Institute.

As the Texas Field Organizer for the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project in San Antonio, TX, Mr. Ruiz was involved with planning and implementing voter registration and Get Out the Vote (GOTV) drives. In 2006 his efforts and guidance lead to the registration of over 10,000 voters in Texas. Currently, he is the Director of Social Justice Initiatives at the Law Office of Domingo Garcia. In this capacity he organizes community outreach efforts on behalf of the highly respected lawyer/civil rights advocate Domingo Garcia. Mr. Ruiz is in the process of applying to law school.
