Happy 4th of July! For those of you VETS in the DC Metro seeking a career in the federal government I invite you to learn more about VRA. Ask me about opportunities with the National Institutes of Health.

The Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA) is an excepted authority that allows agencies to appoint eligible veterans without competition to a position in the excepted service at any grade level up to and including a GS-11 or equivalent. After successfully completing 2 years, you will be converted to the competitive service. Agencies can also use VRA to fill temporary (not to exceed 1 year) or term (more than 1 year but not to exceed 4 years) positions.

In order to qualify, you must meet the following requirements:

THE VETERANS RECRUITMENT APPOINTMENT (VRA) (formerly the Veterans' Readjustment Appointment)

VRA appointees initially are non-competitively hired for a 2-year period. Successful completion of the 2-year VRA appointment leads to a permanent civil service appointment. The following individuals are eligible for a VRA appointment:

* Disabled veterans;
* Veterans who served on active duty in the Armed Forces during a war declared by Congress, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized.
*Veterans who, while serving on active duty in the Armed Forces, participated in a military operation for which the Armed Forces Service Medal was awarded; and
* Veterans honorably separated from active duty within the past 3 years.
