The U.S. is among the top 5 Spanish speaking countries in the world (there are more than 20).
You can't walk from NYC to L.A. and not come across an ATM that does not offer services in Spanish. The same goes for connecting your cable, phone, satellite, etc "para español oprime "1"".
Once corporate america (in its attempt to make a buck) embraced Spanish speaking people -- it legitimized this country as a bilingual nation.

The U.S. is way behind the world when it comes to encouraging it's residents to learn a second language. Go anywhere outside of the US (Mexico, Europe, Russia, etc.) and just about every country makes it a requirement of their students to learn a 2nd language.

My mom is from Mexico so my first language was Spanish, but once I started elementary school I dove into learning English because of the bullies at my school who teased me. Growing up we traveled so much between Texas and Mexico that I never forgot the Spanish I knew and found it fascinating that I could communicate in two countries. Through high school I took Spanish classes because at that point my Mexican cousins made fun of my "mocho" spanish and I had to prove myself.

Then when I started college, I had a tremendous desire to learn a 3rd language...French! French and Spanish are just so similar that it was an easy language to learn. Unfortunately I don't practice French every day the way I do Spanish and English, so I have forgotten a lot...but recently found myself a new friend who is from France and we get to practice our languages with each other.

Now that I have kids, I kick myself every day for not showing them Spanish. I do sit down with basic words every now and then and I have them repeat them to me...my kids can actually speak it really well also when they repeat things. I know it's something that I want them to continue to learn.

Knowing two languages has always been rewarding for me - not only professionally but also personally. I love being able to communicate with someone who looks like they need help and I am not ashamed of speaking Spanish. I've had people look at me as if they never expected me to speak their language.

The U.S. is a huge melting pot of people, the majority of which happen to speak Spanish. It's only natural for so many companies to desire to tap the latino market and use Spanish. It opens the doors of opportunities all the way around - not just for the company, but also for the consumer. I hope this is a practice that never ends!
