What you will do

As the Health Officer you will lead the delivery of cutting-edge public health services to Oregonians by providing medical and evidence-based consultation and promoting prevention of leading causes of disease, death, and injury statewide. As a crucial key leader, the State Epidemiologist will serve as the senior scientist responsible for supporting the public health system at the state and local levels by providing direction and consultation about epidemiologic issues.

This key position will establish and maintain constructive and collaborative working relationships with public officials, coordinated care organizations, local and national governments, state legislature, academic partners, and community partners. You will play a key role in overseeing the State Health Improvement Plan and identify the final priorities for the 2020-2024 plan. The Health Officer/State Epidemiologist will serve as a conduit between the Oregon Health Authority, the Governor’s Office, the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention, and other federal, state, and local partners.

What we are looking for

  • 12 years of progressive management experience in a public or private organization, preferably in a public health program
  • Preference may be given to those with a medical doctor (MD) degree. Must obtain a license to practice medicine in Oregon within 6 months of hire.  
  • Progressive experience developing and implementing strategic public health surveillance and data collection systems, and epidemiologic analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience working across agency lines in partnership and collaboration to connect agency priorities with division/department priorities.
  • Experience in health equity, addressing systemic health disparities and collaborating with diverse, vulnerable, and underrepresented populations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, and influencing, a team, as well as building, and maintaining relationships with diverse stakeholders and community partners.
  • Proven ability to shape and drive strategic agendas, inclusive of strategic visioning, expert data synthesis, and high-profile communications
  • Experience serving as a spokesperson for legislative testimony on issues related to public health matters
