I am working with a colleague in studying the growing boldness of Mexico's drug cartels and their subsidiary street gangs here in the US. The growing destruction these groups are inflicting on Mexico and the US is alarming. It is my belief that the US needs to step to the plate and accept its share of responsibility for the cartels and the gangs, work jointly with Mexico to develop a public aweness of their activities and work jointly to address the situation head on - including the activitiy which dirves the problem -purchase of illicit drugs in the US. I would be ery interested in hearing of your first hand accounts, your thoughts, and your suggestions regarding this important matter.
I agree with you about sharing the responsability of the parties involved; however, it is very difficult that international help would be provided in the intensity that it is required. Another factor to take into acount is that any "help" from an outside government tends to be seen as a threat to the country's sovereignty, unless a set of especific and clear regulations exists. I believe that the first step to solve this problem is to make people (in USA and Mexico) really understand the social impact and the destruction of drug comsuption. In my own experiece, I have seen people consuming drugs because it is socially accepted, "cool", when it shouldn't be. It is an education process what is needed, so that people avoid being part of the problem or even seing it as something that everybody to tried (at least once). I think that people have the power to make any thing possible.
It would be great if some major organization gets involved, and it would be excellent that someday governments could create an alliance, but until then we have to somehow break the vicious cycle.
Thank you for your reply, Damara. I agree, our culture has glamorized drug use. A significant effort must be made to help our kids understand the long term consequences related to a decision to use drugs. Any anti drug strategy must include more emphasis $$ on prevention. -john
