East Haven, CT, United States (AHN) – The police chief in the southern Connecticut town where the U.S. Justice Department says officers systematically harassed and assaulted Hispanics has resigned.

Len Gallo officially steps down as head of the police department in East Haven on Friday, less than two weeks after four officers were charged by the FBI with making unlawful arrests, conspiracy and violating the civil rights of Latinos.

Mayor Joseph Maturo announced the police chief’s retirement in a prepared statement on Monday, accompanied by Gallo’s lawyer.

“While Chief Gallo’s departure comes at a difficult time, it provides a unique opportunity for the department to move forward with new leadership,” said the mayor, who is also facing calls to resign. “I expect the road ahead to be difficult. The selection of a new chief with a vision of hope for the future and the skills to realize that vision will restore morale to the Department and faith to the community.”

Gallo, 64, was named a co-conspirator in the criminal indictment against the four officers arrested last week. He is the target of a civil lawsuit filed as part of the federal probe of the police department but his lawyer acknowledged on Monday that there was “potential for criminal charges by the U.S. Justice Department.”

Did you see the Mayor's response when he was asked what he was doing for the Latino community there?
