Event Description

You’re Invited to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in a safe and encouraging environment for everyone of all ages.

As you may know, Cinco de Mayo is a celebrated event in the California region by many Hispanic communities because of its historical importance in keeping diverse families united through a common purpose of love and hope for one another. This year, we would like to include Antioch Progressive Church in this process by helping to kick off the Cinco de Mayo festivities with great experiences and resources for our local communities by hosting the play, Tomás and the Library Lady, along with various ‘health fair / community resource’ related tables on Saturday, May 2nd from 1 pm to 4:30 pm, with the show starting at 2 pm. The play would be produced and performed free of charge by Cosumnes River College’s Next Stage; this play is directed by Cheri Fortin (916) 691-7583 and is geared to k-6 students.

Tomás and the Library Lady synopsis:

Tomás, the son of migrant farm workers, meets a librarian who introduces him to the wonderful world of books. The stories enrich the lives of Tomás’ family and install a love of reading. This is the inspiring true story of Tomás Rivera, who grew up in a migrant worker family, befriended a librarian in Iowa, and learned to love books and the places they took him. Tomás went on to a successful career in academia and became the Chancellor of the University of California at Riverside. Adapted from the well-loved book by children’s author Pat Mora, this play can be readily understood by both English and Spanish speakers.

Thank you so much for your time and I hope we can all collectively support this May 2, 2009 2 pm matinee showing of Tomás and the Library Lady at Antioch Progressive Church.
Sincerely,

Eddie Madrigal

Whose bright idea was it to close off 18th & 19th sts. for Cinco de Mayo on 5/2?
Firstly, no residents were ASKED if they minded. Secondly, the bldg. in which I live has MANY disabled people who couldn't get to the food mkt. because sidewaalks were closed & to take a shortcut thru the st. would cost them a TICKET! If they used the back alley, they were subjugated to HOLES & uneven pavement. I understand that people want to make money, but residents need freedom to MOVE. Next time,,,,, move the band in front of Chipotle & leave sidewalk in front of Paesanos OPEN. Oh yeah--you could ASK us if we have opposition to any plans! That's only proper & we all KNOW that you understand. It's not rocket science. CONSIDERATION goes a long way come next elections. Understand? Business may be business, but CITIZENS should have a say.
