Color and fancy take flight at Collin Creek Mall when the Kiwanis Club of Greater Plano brings its eighth annual Butterfly Festival to the shopping center. Visitors, young and old alike, will be able to enjoy a walk through a conservatory lined with a kaleidoscope of colors from flowering plants, water fountains and butterflies of every shape and size.
The butterflies are imported from Florida and will be released into an 800-square-foot mesh tent that will be in Center Court on the lower level. The delicate creatures live throughout the week, enjoying the nectar in the specially selected plants that are in the tent. As visitors arrive to enjoy a walk-through, each person will be give a cotton swab soaked in Gatorade to entice the butterflies to alight on the swab for an up-close experience.
A local expert will be on hand several days to provide 15-minute talks about butterflies. Individuals who wish to enjoy the magic of the butterfly will be able to purchase larvae (while supplies last) to take home and watch as a butterfly hatches. Butterfly souvenirs will be available for sale.
Hours for the Butterfly Festival are Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $3.00 for children and $6.00 for adults. Proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the Kiwanis Club. According to Iris Paul, president of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Plano, proceeds from this year’s Butterfly Festival will be used to fund a playground for special needs children.
